GoNET Career Fair

On Saturday April 17, a network of 34 college students and job seekers gathered at Nubuke Foundation in East Legon for a Career and Entrepreneurship Fair organized by Ghana Opportunity Network in collaboration with Nubuke Foundation and Databank Financial Services. Synovate Ghana, Fiesta Royale Hotel, Rancard Solutions, Databank Group and PZ Cussons Ghana Industries Limited were in attendance to advertise available job vacancies and company recruitment procedures. The Co-founder and Executive Vice Chairman of Databank Group, Mr. Keli Gadzekpo and Dr. Kwabena Frimpong, a Vice President at Databank, were invited guests at the event.

The Fair begun with a brief introductory message from Ghana Opportunity Network’s Board Member, Odile Tevie, who spoke about the work of work of the organization and the significance of the Fair. Elinam Adadevoh, Program Manager of Databank Foundation, was the first of three speakers at the Fair. She spoke to participants about the importance of career planning for young eager soon-to-be-college-graduates and job seekers. The Human Resource Manager of HFC Bank, Ms. Mildred Tettey, spoke about the Dos and Don’ts of job interviews and how to job applicants could prepare themselves adequately before presenting themselves before an interview panel. Mr. Eli Tetteh, the third speaker, led an interactive session on curriculum vitae and cover letter writing which drew a lot of questions about format and content of these documents. Mr. Tetteh’s experience as Expository writing tutor and head of the Writing Centre at Ashesi University was apparent with his illustration of common mistakes job applicants make with their curriculum vitae and resumes. The presentations from the speakers ended with questions from participants.

Attendees interacted with speakers and company representatives during lunch before meeting and submitting their applications to the recruiting companies. Mr. Samuel Yeboah who is the Chief Operating Officer of Rancard Solutions said the event was a good start for the Ghana Opportunity Network and encouraged the organization to make it an annual event. Ms. Marian Okine, alum of Valley View University said she learnt a lot from the event’s speakers and has decided to work on her curriculum vitae and brand image.
